TechGuard proximity cards, swipe cards with mag stripe, and fobs with RFID/NFC.  Card inlays and chips will vary, the application is the same; to securely grant or restrict access, track time and other or usage.

RFID card technology such as MIFARE® provides versatility and are contactless to the reader. The activation is passive and occurs by an antennae signal transmitting off the card to the reader. Read distances vary based on the type of reader and card.

MIFARE® card descriptions provided as examples. 

MIFARE Ultralight Ev1: Lowest cost MIFARE chip, lowest memory size. Mostly used for disposable transport cards or other cards of disposable nature.

MIFARE Ultralight C: Higher security version of MIFARE Ultralight Ev1, similar memory sizes/structures but 3DES encryption and additional options vs. simple MIFARE Ultralight Ev1 chips.

MIFARE Classic 1k: 1kb memory size, this is by far the most common MIFARE chip type and is used for all manner of applications from access control to loyalty. No real security but a large 1Kb memory size vs. MIFARE Ultralight Ev1 meaning much more data can be stored on the MIFARE Classic 1k (i.e MIFARE 1k) chip. This is by far the most common chip used in hotel lock systems. Others, like Ving add their own custom algorithms to the chip to try and block 3rd party suppliers.

MIFARE Classic 4k: 4kb memory size, offers the same security and memory structure as MIFARE Classic 1k, with 4x the memory size.

MIFARE Plus (1k SE/2k/4k): MIFARE Plus is the upgraded version of MIFARE Classic. It has 4 security levels that can be set through encoding of the chip, Security level 0 is default of the chip and means it performs the same as a MIfare Classic chip, i.e a Mifare Plus 1k SE chip in SL0 is functionally identical to a Mifare Classic 1k. In the highest security level (Security level 3) Mifare Plus uses AES128 encryption meaning it’s functionally as secure as the highest security Desfire chips (unhackable).

MIFARE Desfire Ev1/Ev2 (256/2k/4k/8k): DESFIRE is the highest security version of the MIFARE family, and it doesn’t use a simple memory structure like the MIFARE Classic or MIFARE Plus chips.  The chip has a full microprocessor file system structure. DESFIRE chips are used in high security applications like secure Student cards or transport cards.  The chip is essentially at the same level as the high security Java smartcards.
